Why do I need a new smile?

Porcelain veneers may be an elected procedure for several reasons. If you have severely worn down teeth caused by grinding of the teeth, then you may need your front teeth built up to correct your bite. Your canine teeth or “eye teeth” need to be strong and pointed in order to correctly separate your back teeth when chewing in side-to-side motions, otherwise you may wear your back teeth too quickly.

Also, if you have large cavities and/or restorations on your front teeth, porcelain veneers may be helpful to restore teeth. Lastly, some people may choose porcelain veneers simply as a cosmetic procedure. There may be severe discoloration of the teeth that cannot be corrected by whitening, such as in fluorosis or tetracycline staining. Teeth that have one or more spaces in between can also be corrected by veneers. Your dentist can design a beautiful smile for you that suits you and looks natural.

What Conditions Can Porcelain Veneers Fix

Porcelain veneers are an excellent choice to correct a variety of dental conditions. Veneers are customized for your specific smile and face structure to ensure a beautiful and natural look.

  • Dental patients who suffer from chipped, cracked, or broken front teeth can use veneers as a solution to bring back a healthy looking smile.
  • Veneers are also a great option for patients who have extremely stained or discoloured teeth, especially if whitening products have not worked.
  • If you have gaps between your teeth, veneers can also help close those, leaving you with a more uniform smile.
  • Veneers are also a solution if you have worn down teeth. Patients who have a history of clenching and grinding run the risk of grinding their teeth down until they are flat and can ruin your bite.
  • If you have irregularly shaped or uneven teeth, veneers can give you a more even and beautiful smile.

How Long Do Porcelain Veneers Last

Porcelain veneers have to be maintained the same way as you would maintain your natural teeth. While they cover your teeth, it is still important to care for them like normal teeth. When they are well-cared for, veneers should last about 10 to 15 years. It is up to the patient who has them to keep them protected to ensure they last as long as possible. Veneers, just like natural teeth, are susceptible to wear, tear, and damage.

How Do I Take Care Of My Porcelain Veneers

The best way to take care of your veneers is to treat them as carefully as your natural teeth. This means not biting or chewing anything that is hard or inedible, like chewing on pens or biting your nails. You need to keep up with your regular biannual dental cleanings to keep them polished as well as helping maintain your overall dental health. You should also wear mouth guards when playing contact sports or if you are a tooth grinder to keep your veneers and your teeth safe.

Treatment Options / Smile Enhancement Techniques

No Tooth Removal Veneers

Preserving your natural tooth structure provides the most benefit to you, as it is stronger than any dental material that may be placed in your mouth. Durathins no-tooth-removal veneers are a great option instead of traditional veneers, as no tooth enamel is removed. The ‘contact-lens’ thin porcelain is applied directly on top of your natural teeth. They are very strong once adhered. They can also be removed at any time in the future, and your natural smile would then be still intact underneath!

Laser Gum Contouring

If you have a ‘gummy’ smile or uneven gum tissue, laser gum contouring can help to make your smile appear wider and more youthful. A soft-tissue diode laser is used to remove some of the extra gum tissue around your tooth, revealing more of your natural tooth underneath. Healing begins immediately in the gums after gum contouring with a laser, making the healing process quicker and painless.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is the most popular cosmetic dental procedure, and it takes just about an hour in the dental chair. We protect your lips and gums, and carefully apply a light-activated whitening gel to your teeth. Results are typically 3 shades lighter after one treatment and there is a shorter duration of sensitivity compared to home whitening kits. Touch-ups can be done either as another in-office whitening appointment, or with a customized touch-up kit made just for you.
