Using a custom mouth guard can help to reduce the pain this causes and prevent further damage to your teeth and body. ## Why do I clench or grind my teeth? It’s very common - lots of people clench or grind their teeth during their sleep without even knowing it! This can be a result of stress, or because your upper and lower teeth do not fit properly in an ideal ‘bite’.  Some people may also clench their teeth when they are driving or doing exercise such as lifting weights. ## What problems can teeth clenching and grinding cause? When you clench and grind your teeth, even if you don’t realize that you’re doing it, you cause damage to the biting surfaces of your teeth and dental restorations. This can cause teeth to wear down over time. If this wear is not prevented by using a mouthguard at night, the damage can build up until all the teeth need to be restored by placing dental crowns. Through severe teeth wear, it is also possible that your ideal jaw position will be affected. This can result in jaw pain and headaches, as well as muscle tension that can start to spread to your neck, back and shoulders.  ## Types of mouthguards To prevent further damage, it’s important to protect your teeth by wearing a mouthguard. At Ironwood Dental Care, we can provide you with nightguards and sportsguards to protect your teeth from further wear. #### Nightguards If we spot the early signs of tooth wear on your teeth, it’s important for you to be fitted with a nightguard to prevent this from getting worse. A nightguard is specially formed to your teeth and the material is thin and comfortable. You should wear it throughout the night and also when you may unconsciously clench your teeth during the day – such as when exercising or driving. Your mouthguard can be replaced every couple of years as it is gradually worn down. Having the wear transferred to the guard instead of your teeth means that you will be preserving healthy tooth enamel. #### Sportsguards Wearing a custom-made sportsguard has many benefits over choosing a store-bought heat-formed guard. As a sportsguard is specially formed to your teeth, it fits much better and is less likely to be dislodged from your mouth during contact. It is also formed with several layers that are designed to absorb shock, therefore providing concussion protection.  Because a sportsguard is made to fit your teeth, it can be produced with minimal palatal thickness which makes talking and breathing much easier. By investing in a proper sportsguard, you can save lots of money in dental work. ![](https://www.ironwooddental.com/hubfs/Content_bglite-2.png) ## Book a consultation now We warmly welcome new patients to our office and do our best to schedule emergency appointments within 24 hours of your call.
