Laser Dentistry

At Ironwood Dental Care, we use lasers in lots of dental procedures to make them faster and more comfortable for you, as well as promote quicker healing.

What is laser treatment in dentistry?

Lasers have been around in dentistry for around 30 years and are used in a variety of dental procedures.

At Ironwood, we have three types of lasers. Each uses different wavelengths of energy and is used in different types of dental treatments. For example, we have soft-tissue lasers to treat skin and gums, and hard-tissue lasers for treatments such as root canals, fillings and dental crowns.

Hygiene & Cleaning

We use a laser to sterilize the space between your teeth and gums after cleaning, which helps tissues heal.

Why do we use laser dentistry?

There are many benefits to using lasers in dental treatments.

They are useful in a whole range of dental procedures and treatments.

Lasers can make your dental procedures faster and more comfortable than treatment using a drill.

Lasers can activate your cellular healing processes, which means that healing is faster and there are fewer complications.

It’s possible to do hard-tissue treatments, such as fillings and crowns, without anaesthetic.

Lasers sterilize the tissue as it is cut during the procedure.

How does it feel to have treatment with a laser?

Lots of patients say having dental treatment with a laser is more comfortable! Since it’s touchless, there’s no vibration that comes from traditional drilling. And often, there’s no need for freezing either! So you won’t be left with a numb mouth after your procedure is over.

While you’re having your treatment, you might notice a ‘ticking’ or ‘popping’ sound, and a slight cold sensation. We also often say that it smells a bit like cooking popcorn!
